Ridiculous? Well, as I said everone has a right to believe in whatever you like without fear of condemnation and oppression. Look forward a few centuries, the 'Elvis religion' with 'priests' dressed as impersonators, Elvis songs as Psalms etc etc.
Whatever one's own views on religion, everyone has the right to their own faith, the right to believe in whatever you like without fear of condemnation and oppression. Whilst clearly you don't have to believe in any form of religion to understand the impact of gospel and spiritual music upon Elvis and it's role in the development of R 'n' R, but to understand the complexities of the man, you certainly would need to look at the role of religion in his life, particularly his childhood.
